Getting to know the effect of high technology on life-styles

  • Read "The Man Who Could Buy Anything"p. 58--59

  • Read the article on Ikea founder and the article on Bill Gates as philanthropist (distributed in class)

  •  

  • Do hand-out exercise with relative pronouns  (who, which, that, whose, whom)

  • Review page:  (words/expressions that have come up in class discussions

  • Do exercise 2 "relative clauses", p. 60

Read hand-out, "What is your leaning style?" and do discussion activity with student next to you

  • Readings on learning styles and making a personal vocabulary file

  • Homework: Write definitions/sentences and choose a picture for your assigned vocabulary words

  • Composition: Explain what "type" of learner ("visual", "auditory" or "kinetic") you think you are. Explain which kinds of activities help you learn language and remember new words

a philanthropist from your native country (or from another country)

Discuss whether the main character Silvia is in danger or not and her possible connection to the characters in the first scene

 

Homework: Write two -- three paragraphs about whether you feel watching and discussing the The Interpreter every Thursday is a good way to improve English--or if you would prefer to watch a different video program each Thursday

In your opinion, is watching the movie, The Interpreter a good method for learning English? Why or why not? Answer your question by addressing the following aspects of the film:

Ways of Seeing
  • In-class: Read  and discuss the "Alligator-River Story" in groups
  • Discuss your view and ranking of the five characters in the story and explain your response
  • Discussion will allow practice of the modal past: should have, could have, might have, must have+past participle
  • Do modal past exercise in hand-outs

Homework composition: Choose a character from the "Alligator-River Story". Tell why you think this character took the wrong course of action in the story--and write about what you think he or she should have done instead.  Also mention other courses of action the character could have taken.

Weekend composition: Choose statement 4 from the Gattaca film handout. Explain in a composition of two-three paragraphs why you agree or disagree with the statement.

Review "The Grand Vocabulary List"

expressing  "contrary-to-fact" wishes: (for example, I wish I were  back in my native city now, I wish I could speak ten languages fluently)
  • In-class exercise:  simulate a "video-conference": two panels, one asking questions and seeking advice, the other providing advice on living in New York City (about places to live, social customs, new contacts)
  • Class on UN clubs: exchanging information about clubs and organizations available to members of the UN community
  • Homework: Call one of the UN clubs on the list (get list from teacher)and ask information about membership fees, meeting schedules, activities offered, benefits to members

                 Composition:  Write about a memorable experience you had: something you will always remember/never forget

      Homework composition: Write two--three paragraphs describing which aspects of English (reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, or listening) you've had difficulty mastering. Also describe which learning activities you've enjoyed doing (learning songs in English, watching films, reading newspapers or magazines, practicing conversation, etc)

      Weekend homework composition: Choose one of the 'cultural items' discussed in class (see list above) and describe the custom in your native culture or in another culture  that you are familiar with
